West Suffolk Liberal Democrats

Elfreda Tealby-Watson Is Candidate For West Suffolk

November 20, 2019 1:10 PM

West Suffolk Liberal Democrats confirm that Elfreda Tealby-Watson has returned to the West Suffolk constituency as candidate for the December general election. West Suffolk Liberal Democrat local party covers the West Suffolk District Council area. This includes both West Suffolk and Bury St Edmunds Westminster seats, and part of South Suffolk constituency.

Last week the Liberal Democrats stood aside in Bury St Edmunds constituency for Unite to Remain, and local party chair John Derry comments, "In many seats across the country, this ground-breaking agreement, facilitated by the Unite to Remain campaign group, will help to secure more Remain backing MPs in the next Parliament. We are delighted, however, that Elfreda will be standing in West Suffolk constituency. She is a longstanding Liberal Democrat campaigner across East Anglia and her breadth of experience will be hugely helpful to our area."

Elfreda says, "The people of West Suffolk constituency deserve a strong voice to Stop Brexit and to fight for a Brighter Future. Here the Liberal Democrats are the strongest party to deliver that in this election. West Suffolk will only thrive as part of an outward looking East Anglian culture and economy."

Biography and Vision for West Suffolk

Elfreda was born and grew up in East Anglia. Her home is in neighbouring Essex, with her husband and daughters. She runs a small property business and is an ordained Church Elder. She attended comprehensive school in Norfolk. She has a history degree from Cambridge University and a Masters in American Politics.

For relaxation, she loves walking, film, music and art. Her father grew up in Exning and encouraged a love of horse racing. She is still a regular at Newmarket.

Elfreda believes West Suffolk is the heart of East Anglia, defined by its connections: racegoers and bloodstock investors coming to Newmarket; international military links; neighbouring Cambridge with its global reputation in technology, education, medicine and research; and major international and UK transport routes. Elfreda believes EU membership supports that, bringing investment, research funding, and access to training and skilled people. West Suffolk must remain outward-looking for its economy and culture to thrive.

Politically, Elfreda was vice-chair of the Environment Committee when the Liberal Democrats held Uttlesford District Council. She now offers voters a clear Remain voice. Stopping Brexit means we can focus on issues including the climate crisis, and health and social care. Elfreda has been a school governor, fundraiser for a homelessness hostel and chair of a Home-Start scheme supporting young families. She is a proven campaigner.

She experienced the strain on our NHS and care systems, when caring for her mother with dementia, leaving a career in events management to work flexibly to do so. She volunteers for Alzheimer's Research UK. The Liberal Democrats forecast a £50bn Remain Bonus based on a larger economy if we stay in the EU. "With that money we can build a brighter future and better services, and I have the firm beliefs and skills to get the best for West Suffolk."
