CAM Links to Mildenhall and Haverhill by 2029

The Cambridgeshire Autonomous Metro (CAM) project could transform the transport links for two of our most important towns. The project team is currently developing the policy framework and organisational capacity to progress the project. Soon we may have more details on regional routes and what they could mean for West Suffolk towns like Haverhill and Mildenhall, where current proposals have routes terminating.

The project is led by the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority who are developing an Outline Business Case (OBC). The CAM will provide a trackless metro with underground tunnelling through Cambridge, major interchange hubs in the city and at Cambridge station, and four proposed regional routes which will connect St Neots, Alconbury, Mildenhall, and Haverhill with the city tunnel section.

It is currently proposed that the CAM will be segregated from road traffic with a total route length of nearly 150km and manually driven initially for the CAM opening, but the aspiration is for driverless technology in the future.

There is still a lot of detail to be developed on the CAM regional routes including Granta Park to Haverhill and Newmarket Road Park and Ride (Cambridge) to Mildenhall, which will include further consultation and opportunities for you to contribute as regional route scheme details emerge.

At the recent Combined Authority Board meeting on 5 August 2020, it was agreed that a special purpose vehicle should be established to deliver the CAM programme due to the complexity and scope of the project.

The Combined Authority have also recently drafted a CAM Sub-Strategy, which describes the policy framework for the CAM and which, according to West Suffolk Council Leader, John Griffiths, "aligns well with the West Suffolk Strategic Framework".

The planned timescales:

9 September 2020 - Overview of the consultation and engagement undertaken by the Combined Authority as part of the CAM Outline Business Case Non-Statutory Consultation goes to the Transport and Infrastructure Committee between 21 February and 3 April 2020.

Late 2020 - Outlin Business Case delivered for core tunnels

Quarter 1 2022 - Transport Works Act Order application (following consultation)

2023/24 - Construction commences

2029 - Construction complete
