Rights! What Rights?

On 28th December Barrie Skelcher blasted away again with his blustergun on Europe. Now I can't tell if he is attacking Europe or the European Union. Neither is governed as he claims by a President so it is very confusing about what he is actually complaining about this time. What was starkly obvious was his lack of knowledge of British traditions. We are not citizens! The French and Germans are citizens, but we Mr Skelcher are subjects! Subjects of the Crown, and long may it remain so!

For years we have had no rights. We have had no civil rights enforceable in the United Kingdom! No written constitution! For a long time we only had human rights through the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights, but to enforce those rights we have for a long time had to go through the European Courts. Even a child in Britain does not have the right to see both its parents!

But now thanks to the Lisbon Treaty we have guarantees that enforce the Charter of Fundamental Rights! It is only through the European Convention on Human Rights that individuals in this country can get protection from violation of Human Rights. Mind you the Tories want to pull out from having these rights!

It is only through the Lisbon Treaty that individuals in the UK acquire a catalogue of civil, political, economic and social rights, which are legally binding! In addition this Treaty allows residents to sidestep governments and propose their own legislation. All you need is one million signatures. There are of course 60 million Britons and nearly 500 million residents of the EU and that is possible when modern technology makes mass communication easy.

There is one thing I can guarantee Mr Skelcher will like about the Lisbon Treaty! What you say? Something about the Lisbon Treaty Barrie will love? Yes! The Lisbon Treaty gives every member of the European Union the right to withdraw from the European Union!

British Law subservient to EU law? Thank goodness British police can order the arrest of criminals across the whole of the EU. No more hiding in Spain. Barrie claims Euro-Bureaucrats are not accountable. Wake up Mr Skelcher! When did you last see a civil servant forced from office in the UK for incompetence? It's Minister's that fall when clerks foul up!

Can I remind him that no British Prime Minister has ever been directly elected by the public in the UK, and thank goodness for that! That would end Parliamentary Democracy if a Prime Minister could defy the House of Commons through an elected mandate. We need a proper written constitution and rights we can enforce in British Courts without having to go to the European Courts.
